2.1.5.1 Technical unit prefixes
• To form the multiple or submultiple of a unit, simply place the name of the desired prefix in front of the
unit. The same applies to the symbol.
To multiply the "volt" unit by 1000: kilo + volt = kilovolt and k + V = kV.
To divide the "volt" unit by 1000: milli + volt = millivolt and m + V = mV.
• These prefixes can also be employed with units outside the SI: millibar; kilocalorie; megaton; hectolitre
etc.
• For historical reasons, the name of the "mass" unit contains a prefix: kilogram. Therefore, multiples and
submultiples of this unit are formed using grams
