Appendix B: Basic TCD Operation via Serial Commands
NOTE: For more thorough documentation of the serial control possibilities
designed into the TCD-3 controller, contact VICI tech support.
Establishing Serial Communication
Serial communication must be established with the TCD-3 controller unit to set
system parameters, including detector temperature and filament power levels.
The interface is available by means of a RS-232C link. Once established, the serial
communications link can be used either through a direct command console
terminal, or by the provided Graphical User Interface (GUI).
Serial communication requires a terminal emulation or communication software
(such as Tera Term, PuTTY, Qodem, Procomm Plus, etc.) Though the programs
vary, in general you will be asked to select “Serial” from among various types
of connections, select the COM port which will be used for the TCD, name the
connection, and set some parameters; set the serial port at 115200 BAUD, using
8 data bits, no parity bits, 1 stop bit, and no flow control (115200-8N1).
Confirming Communication
With the software running, turn the On/Off switch on the controller to the ON
position. If the link is functioning, the following welcome message will appear on
your monitor. This message lists the unit designation, the firmware and hardware
revisions, and the unit serial number.
Valco Instruments Company Incorporated
Thermal Conductivity Detector, Version 3
Firmware revision: 1.0.0
Hardware revision: TCD3-C rev. F
Unit serial number: 100

Following the welcome message, the TCD-3 will begin its hardware initialization
sequence. By default, the console port will display the status of this procedure
(this listing can be disabled with the WM command):
Configuring hardware modules:
* Parameters restored
* Digital pot 1 initialized.
* Digital pot 2 initialized.
* MCU ADC configured
* RTD ADC configured (device ID 0x23)
* Ext ADC configured (device ID 0x23)
* DAC1 converter configured (device ID 0x1)
* DAC2 converter configured (device ID 0x1)
* PID controller initialized
* Detector present
boot-up complete!
After the welcome and initialization messages, the command prompt will be
displayed. This 2-character prompt sequence (“: “) is also displayed after any
commands are processed, and indicates that the TCD-3 unit is ready to accept a
new command.
