1.2 Histogram Equalization
The histogram equalization function is applied to each frame as it proceeds from the FPA to the display.
This function examines the scene for temperature content. It then allocates the display dynamic range
to show as much detail as possible. This function is shown in Figure 1.2-2.

In the picture on the left (linear, histogram equalization off), the flames in the foreground set the dynamic
range of the display evenly between the relatively cool background and the hot flames. As a result, all of
the detail in the background is lost. In the picture on the right, the histogram equalization algorithm
allocates the display dynamic range to bring out the details in the background scene. The flames are still
the hottest item in the scene, but there is nothing else in the scene that has a temperature between the
background and the hot flames. Therefore no detail is lost by readjusting the display dynamic range.
