Introduction
Outline
The optical interface unit (GIF200) is used to connect with the multiplexer (MUX), when the
line protection relay (GRL200 IED having a protection-signaling module in ST port) is
required to connect with the remote GLR200 IED in the switched communication network
achieved with the MUX. The signals of the GIF200 unit are complied with the IEEE C37.94
standard and the ITU-T G.703 standards.
Connection and signal-conversion
The information of the line protection can be required to exchange in the telecommunication
protocol defined in the ITU-T G.703 (64kbps). Hence, the information of the IEEE C37.94
(N=3; 2048kbps) generated in the GRL200 IED should be converted in the ITU-T G.703
(64kbps) format. Figure 1.2-1 illustrates the line protection structure achieved with the
GRL200 IEDs together with GIF200 units and the MUXs.

In most situations, the telecommunications equipment is remote from the protection
equipment in the substation. The GIF200 unit is normally located closed to the MUX and may
be up to 2km away from the GRL200 IED. The fiber optic cable must be 50/125μm or
62.5/125μm for distance up to 2km; it should be terminated with standard ST type connectors.
The GIF200 is connected to the switched telecommunication network via a MUX, and the
interface is defined according to the ITU-T G.703 standard. The connections should be made
using shielded, twisted pair cable.
