Training Required to package,
transport or ship an eFLEX
Lithium Ion Battery
No Parts Required
Procedure
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that
anyone who offers hazardous materials for transportation or
transports them on public roads, highways, or by rail, vessel
or air be trained in the general requirements for shipping
hazardous materials safely, security awareness, and job-specific
requirements. This applies to anyone who “affects the cycle
of transportation” and has specific importance to anyone
who signs a shipping paper, bill of lading or dangerous goods
declaration. The same materials are referred to in the US as
“hazardous materials” and in international transportation
as “dangerous goods”. This training is required every
three years. The purpose of this document is to instruct
the user on proper
packaging
methods for the eFLEX
Lithium Ion Battery. For more information on Lithium Ion
Battery
shipping guidance

Battery Acceptability for
Shipping
No Parts Required
Procedure
Important:
A lithium ion battery that has any damage
or is being shipped for disposal/recycling may NOT be
shipped via air transportation. Use only ground freight
in these instances.
1.
When shipping a lithium ion battery for service or
warranty reasons, there are only two containers that
can be used:
•
The Type PG II shipping container, a custom
designed cardboard shipping box (Available as a
shipping kit via Toro Parts, PN 120–6950). Reusing
an available eFLEX lithium ion battery shipping
box with the proper foam inserts is acceptable if
the packaging, including decals, are in good shape.
•
The Type PG I shipping container, a liquid tight
sealed metal drum
The standard shipping pack can (and
must
be used
to return the pack for RGA if the lithium ion battery
has only minor damage which does not affect the
mechanical integrity of the packaging, such as the
following:
•
Small cracks (under 5 inches long)
•
Cracked or broken fins
•
Small punctures (under 1 inch in diameter)
•
No combination or multiples of the above items
•
No trapped water or other fluids
•
No leaking electrolytes
No other cardboard carton, packaging,
tape, or labeling is acceptable. If the
pack meets these criterion, proceed to
3 PG II (Cardboard Shipping Container) Packing (page 2).
