7. Press and hold the Battery button ( ) for five seconds to put the System Controller to sleep.
Note: The following “Hold” screen appears accompanied by a reverse countdown from
five dots to one dot ( Figure 2.33 ). When the countdown ends, the System Controller is in
Sleep Mode.

Maintaining Backup System Controller Readiness
Over time, the backup battery inside the System Controller loses power and must be recharged
every six months. The backup battery must be awakened, connected to power, and put into
Charge Mode. Connecting the backup System Controller to power charges its internal 11 Volt
Lithium-Ion backup battery. While the backup System Controller is in Charge Mode, a self test
should be performed.

1. Connect the backup System Controller to a power source: Power Module, Mobile Power Unit,
or two HeartMate 14 Volt Lithium-Ion batteries ( Figure 2.34 ).
