you’ve tightened all the bolts, go back through the pattern again to ensure that each bolt is
evenly tight.
NOTE
If the flight will occur without the FARO Focus scanner or any other payload, for
instance for training purposes, then the pilot is advised to hang a dummy weight
underneath the STORMBEE to keep the Take-Off Mass near the MTOM. The reason of
this is that a multirotor varies the thrust of each propulsion unit individually to control
its attitude. However, if the thrust it must deliver is lower than normal, for instance
when STORMBEE has no payload attached, then the amount of thrust it can vary will
also be smaller. This will result in less agility and thus less stability in the presence of
(strong) winds and turbulence (gusts).
NOTE
Check that the mirror of the FARO Focus scanner is clean. If not, follow the cleaning
instructions from your FARO Focus scanner manual. Be very careful to not scratch the
mirror when cleaning it as this may irreversibly damage it.

Remove the foam mirror protection piece before powering on the scanner.

Settings
The FARO Focus scanner supports two basic laser scanner operation modes, the spherical scan mode
(used for static operations) and the helical scan mode (used by STORMBEE). The helical mode has two
sub modes, the helical TTL and the helical CAN mode. These two sub modes differ from one another
in the control and communication signals.
STORMBEE operations require the user to use the TTL
helical mode
, not the CAN mode! STORMBEE needs the FARO Focus scanner to be in TTL mode to
enable mirror and time stamp synchronization with the positioning data of the GNSS module for post-
processing the laser scan data.
When a helical mode is enabled, the horizontal rotation axis stays locked and the scanner will not turn
horizontally. When switching the scanner off in helical mode, it will keep knowledge about this mode
and the horizontal rotation axis is still locked when the scanner is switched on again.

profile settings (X-series only)

(S-series only)" on how to create and select an appropriate helical profile suitable for STORMBEE
operations.
NOTE
In helical mode, capturing of coloured scans is not supported as well as setting the
horizontal scan angles.
