Ion Optics
The ion optics focus the ions produced in the ion source and transmit them to the mass
analyzer. The ion optics includes the Q0 quadrupole and lenses L11 and L12.
The Q0 quadrupole is a square array of square-profile rods that act as an ion transmission
device. See
. An rf voltage applied to the rods gives rise to an electric field that guides
the ions along the axis of the quadrupole. The Q0 offset voltage increases the translational
kinetic energy of ions emerging from the ion source.
The Q0 quadrupole is split into two sections. See
. The smaller, heated Q0
quadrupole assembly attaches to the ion source, which heats it with the cartridge heaters. The
rods of the heated Q0 quadrupole make electrical contact with the rods of the larger Q0
quadrupole.
