1.
Remove nut (1) securing motor lead (2) to the
solenoid.
2.
Remove two long screws (3) and remove the motor
assembly from the solenoid (19).
3.
Remove two screw assemblies (4) and end cap (5).
4.
Lift up on the springs and remove the two yoke
brushes (6) from the brush holder (7).
5.
Remove the brush holder (7).
6.
Remove the armature (

) from the yoke (9).
7.
Remove the two sealing rings (10).

Remove two screws (11) and gear housing (12)
9.
Remove gear (13), roller cage (14) and five rollers
(15).
10. Remove clutch assembly (16), ball (17) and spring
(1

).
11. Remove three screws (20) and end cap (21) from
solenoid (19).
12. Remove plunger (22).
13. Inspect bearings (23 and 24) on armature (
8
).
Remove bearings if replacement is required.
Installation Notes
Install the starter by reversing the order of removal.
Brush Holder Inspection

1.
Lift up on spring (1) and remove the two brush holder
brushes (2) from brush brackets (4).
2.
Measure the length (3) of the brushes attached to the
brush holder.
Is the length less than 0.413 in. (10.5 mm)?
YES
Brushes have too much wear. Replace the
brush holder assembly.
NO
Continue with step 3.
3.
Check for continuity between the brush brackets (4)
and the metal support plate (5).
Is continuity indicated?
YES
Brush holder is bad. Replace the brush
holder.
NO
The brush holder is good.
Starter Yoke Inspection

1.
Measure the length (4) of the brushes (2) attached to
the yoke (3).
Is the length less than 0.413 in. (10.5 mm)?
YES
Brushes have too much wear. Replace the
starter yoke.
NO
Continue with step 2.
2.
Check for continuity between the brushes (2) and the
motor lead wire (1).
Is continuity indicated?
YES
Continue with step 3.
NO
The yoke is bad. Replace the starter yoke.
3.
Check for continuity between the brushes (2) and the
starter yoke body (3).
Is continuity indicated?
YES
The starter yoke is bad. Replace the starter
yoke.
NO
The starter yoke is good.
