6. Rear Wheel Axle Sleeve Adjustment
Tight axle sleeves should be maintained
for proper performance of the wheelchair.
a) To adjust the axle you will need a 3/4"
wrench to turn the outside axle nuts.
b) You will also need a 1/2" wrench to
lodge the ball bearings, on the opposite
end of the axle, and prevent the axle
from turning.
c) Turn the outside axle nut counter-
clockwise to tighten.
d) There should only be zero to ten
thousandths of an inch (.010") of play.
H. CASTER FORKS
Two-hole caster forks allow interchanging
3", 5" and 6" casters and adjusting seat height.
1. Caster Fork Adjustment
a) Loosen the bolt and remove the caster.
b) Either change caster size and/or position
caster upward or downward in predrilled
holes (1 inch apart) on caster fork.
c) Replace bolt and tighten securely.
d) Repeat with other caster.
I. CASTER PLATES
1. Angle Adjustment
a) Loosen the two eccentric bolts that
secure the caster assembly. Do not
remove the clevis pin.
b) Place a large right triangle against the
table surface and the front surface of
the caster bearing housing.This will
align the caster stem rotational axis
perpendicular to the floor surface.
c) When alignment is satisfactory,
retighten the two eccentric bolts.
d) Repeat the process for the other caster.
J. CASTER MOUNTING
1. Forward or Rearward Placement
a) Remove caster housing cover.
b) Remove the two eccentric bolts from
each caster.
c) Move left-side caster to right-side.
d) Move right-side caster to left-side.
e) Remount casters to caster bracket.
f) Tighten the eccentric bolts.
g) Replace caster housing cover.
3.Toe-In and Toe-Out
Toe-in and Toe-out terms are terms that
relate to how well the rear wheels of the
chair are aligned.This will affect how well
the chair will roll. Drag or resistance
occurs in a wheelchair when the rear
wheels are not properly aligned.
Toe-in can be slightly adjusted for setting
the axle adjustment bracket to be parallel
with the ground.To make this adjustment:
a) Remove side plate.
b) Turn eccentric bolt until axle adjustment
bracket is exactly parallel to the ground.
c) Reinstall side plate.
d) The axle should protrude equal
amounts on both sides of the chair.
4. Wheelbase Width Adjustment
Adjusting the wheelbase width allows the
rider the option to move the wheels closer
or further away from the hips. It also
compensates for camber adjustment
and gives the proper wheel spacing to
maximize pushing efficiency.
Adjust the wheelbase by:
a) Loosening the nut and repositioning
the axle sleeve by screwing in or out
of camber tube.
b) Retighten nuts.
c) Repeat on other side of chair.
d) The axle should protrude equal
amounts on both sides of the chair.
5. Seat Height Adjustment (angle)
The benefit of the seat height adjustment
is that it allows the rider to adjust the
seat height for environment, body and
mechanical efficiency.There may be times
when it is advantageous to have an angled
seat such as when playing basketball or
tennis.Whenever the set angle changes,
the front caster stem must be realigned
to a 90º angle.
Seat height can be adjusted by:
a) Adding a 3/4" or 1 1/2" spacer.
Spacers are available from your
authorized supplier.
b) This adjustment should only be made
by an authorized supplier.
