As
the
cutter
drills into the workpiece, the pilot
pin retracts and tightens the spring. As a result, after
the
cutter drills
through
the
material, the slug core is expelled from the cutter. Also, when pressed, the pilot pin
allows application of coolant to the inside of the cutter.

Annular cutters are designed to drill only through holes shown in Fig. 3. When drilling
incomplete through holes the pilot pin must not be used.
