Function and Device Design
4.1
Function
Application range
The isolating repeater input is used to transmit intrinsically safe analogue signals
(current or voltage) from the field to a distributed control system or a PLC. The device is
approved for use in areas of Zone 2 with potentially explosive gas, in areas of Zone 22
with potentially explosive dust as well as in safe areas. The device can be used up to SIL2
(IEC 61508).
Mode of operation
Isolating Repeater types 9163/.3-..-.. are used to transmit an intrinsically safe,
active 0/4 to 20 mA signal from the field to a distributed control system or a PLC.
The typical application involves 4-conductor transmitters that feature a separate auxiliary
power supply. The devices transmit a superimposed HART communication signal
bidirectionally.
The Isolating Repeater type 9163/11-81-10 converts an intrinsically safe voltage signal
(0/1 to 5 V or 0/2 to 10 V) to a non-intrinsically safe 0/4 to 20 mA signal.
