5.4. REFLECTOMETER (REF)
REF FUNCTIONAL DIAGRAM
The REF is intended for testing cables in order to detect abnormal connections
(heterogeneities).
A sinusoidal signal is emitted into the cable, which is reflected from the heterogeneity and
returns with delay.
The phase of the reflected signal is different from the phase of the emitted signal. Similar
procedures are performed for multiple frequencies.
As a result, a spectrum is formed with alternating maxima. Analysis of this spectrum allows us
to determine the distance to the defect (heterogeneity) in the cable under test.
The REF determines the distance to the heterogeneity with an accuracy of ±0.6 m., which
depends on the correctly set Shortening Factor.
The procedure for setting the Shortening Factor is described in
For the correct operation of the REF it is necessary:
1. Disconnect the cable from all electronic devices (only the cable is tested).
2. Have access to both ends of the cable.
Wires of cable should not be shorted at the far end. If the cable has branches, it must be
segmented and each segment tested. REF can be used in AUTOMATED and MANUAL modes.
