INTRODUCTION
'l'he SSD Ranger is a non--contacting proximity transducer which
is specifically designed for reel diameter measurement and
other applications such as material loop height control.
Non-contacting operation is possible by using pulses of
ultrasonic energy which can be reflected back from the target.
If the time taken for the pulses to be returned to the
transducer. is measured,
a
direct indication of distance can be
calculated.
The measurement of distance is indicated as an analogue
voltage. which can be scaled to give full scale output for any
distance within the range of the transducer.
The transducer consists of two parts which are connected
together using a twin core screened cable.
The sense
head
comprises a heavy duty diecast box which houses the two
ultrasonic heads.
The box is positioned such that the
ultrasonic heads point towards the object to be measured. The
control module can be located a considerable distance from the
sense head. and contains processing circuitry to output an
analogue signal proportional to distance.
The control module
is powered from 110 or 240 VAC and in turn powers the sense
head via the twin screened cable.
No external power is
required for the sense head.
Other standard features are user relay contacts for transducer
healthy and user range trip.
This trip level can be adjusted
either using the on board or external user potentiometers. On
board indication is also given for under and over range as well
as transducer healthy and rang trip.
Protection is also given against loss of signal from the
target.
If the signal is lost. an over (diameter} range occurs
and the last value of range is held on the output. A similar
situation occurs if any "false" pulses are returned. which
would cause a wrong range to be output,
In the presence of
these "noise" outputs, the output is once again held at the
last valid range for up to
a
maximum time of one second.
Comprehensive diagnostic facilities are also offered. via an on
boar.a socket which al 1 ows the use of the diagnostic test unit
type 5570. This also acts as an aid to the on site calibration
of the transducer.
