12. General Information
Shutoff valves must be installed in front and aft of the pump. This eliminates the
necessity of draining the pump every time for maintenance, repair, shutdown or
replacement work.
Where pumps are installed near living areas, compensators on the suction and
discharge sides of the pump are recommended as well as a vibration dampener
between the pump and foundation.
We would like to point out expressly that tensions in the piping must never be
allowed to affect the pump. Thus the pump should be installed in such a way
that any tension, such as for example tension caused by temperature varia -
tions, cannot adversely affect the functioning of the pump. When installing pipe-
lines, these should be free of tension in front and aft of the pump.
In installations where pumps may be forced to work against closed shut-off
valves etc., a bypass line should be installed (minimum flow rate = 10% of the
rated pump capacity, with water at 20°C).
Whenever a pump is integrated into a system it is mandatory that the operatio-
nal conditions affecting the pump should be determined first (e.g. minimal size
of a strainer tank, protection against dry running, pressure surges, simulta -
neous intake of air, draining of the pump due to a siphon etc.).
