Introduction
The Southwire 40130N detects AC voltage from 50V to 1000V.
A LED flashlight is built-in for added convenience.
With proper use, it will provide many years of reliable service.
International Safety Symbols
Potential danger. Indicates the user must refer to the
manual for important safety information
Indicates hazardous voltages may be present
Equipment is protected by double or reinforced insulation
• If the tester is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer,
the safety features provided by the tester may be affected.
• Check on a known live source within the rated AC voltage range
of the tester before use to ensure it is in working order.
• Insulation type and thickness, distance from the voltage source,
shielded wires, and other factors may effect reliable operation.
Use other methods to verify live voltage, if there is any
uncertainty.
• Do not use if the tester appears damaged or if it is not operating
properly. If in doubt, replace the tester.
• Do not use on voltages that are higher than as marked on the
tester.
• Use caution with voltages above 30 volts AC as a shock hazard
may exist.
• Comply with local and national safety requirements - particularly
with regard to arc-flash potential.
• Use approved personal protective equipment when working on
live circuits.

Maintenance
1. KEEP THE TESTER DRY. If it gets wet, wipe it off.
2. USE AND STORE THE TESTER IN NORMAL TEMPERATURES. Temperature extremes
can shorten the life of the electronic parts and distort or melt plastic parts.
3. HANDLE THE TESTER GENTLY AND CAREFULLY. Dropping it can damage the
electronic parts or the case.
4. KEEP THE TESTER CLEAN. Wipe the case occasionally with a damp cloth.
DO NOT use chemicals, cleaning solvents, or detergents.
5. USE ONLY FRESH BATTERIES OF THE RECOMMENDED SIZE AND TYPE.
Remove old or weak batteries so they do not leak and damage the unit.

Operation
1. Testing with sound alarm:
Push the Power button and quickly release. You will hear
a single-beeping sound immediately followed by a steady green LED. The tester is now
activated and is operational with beeper alarm. Verify that the tester is functioning by
placing the tip of the tester near a known live AC voltage within the defined detection
range. The red LED will flash and the beeper will emit a pulsating tone.
2. Testing without sound alarm:
With the tester off, press and hold the power button.
You will see a steady green LED. Release the power button. The tester is now activated
and is operational without beeper. Verify that the tester is functioning by placing the tip
of the tester near a known live AC voltage within the defined detection range.
The red LED will flash without the beeper sound.
3. Checking for the presence of AC voltage:
Place the tip of the tester near an AC
voltage. If the tester detects voltage within the defined detection range, the LED at the
tip of the tester changes color from green to red. The red LED will continuously flash and
a pulsating beeping sound will be heard if the beeper is activated (refer to Testing with
sound alarm). The flash rate of the LED and the beeping rate will increase as the tester
gets closer to the voltage source.
4. Turn unit off:
Press and hold the power button. Listen for a double beeping
sound and watch the “power on” green LED turn off. Release the power button.
The tester is now deactivated and is not operational.
3. Replace the batteries (observe polarity). Use two AAA 1.5V batteries.
6. Auto Power Off:
After 5 minutes of non-use, the tester automatically powers
off to conserve battery life. Listen for a double-beep sound and watch the
“power on” green LED turn off. The tester is now deactivated and is not operational.
7. Flashlight:
Press and hold the button with the symbol to turn on the flashlight.
Release the button to turn off the flashlight.
5. Low battery indication: Scenario 1 –
Powering on the tester: The “power on” LED
in the tip of the tester changes from a steady green to a blinking green and a series of
beeping sounds is generated. The tester then turns off. The unit is now deactivated and
not operational. The batteries require replacement. To replace the batteries, refer to the
Battery Replacement instructions.
Scenario 2 –
Operating the tester: If the LED lights become dim and the tone fades,
the tester may require new batteries. To replace the batteries refer to the Battery
Replacement instructions.
3.
5. Verify operation by using the tester on a known live AC voltage.
NOTE:
When batteries are loaded for the first time, please remove the white,
rectangular security strip before installing batteries.
