Blu-ray
Blu-ray is the next
generation of optical
disc, named after the
blue laser that reads
it. A single layer DVD can hold up to 4.7GB
of data while a dual layer DVD can hold up to
8.5GB. In contrast, a Blu-ray disc, while looking
physically similar, can hold 25GB on a single
layer (almost 2 hours of HDV footage) and 50GB
on a dual layer disc. The larger storage capacity
means you can now store and playback higher
quality videos with higher quality audio. Users
can now also store up to five times the amount
of data they could on a regular DVD.

The Future of Blu-ray
Already the benefits of this larger data capacity
are being realised in Sony’s next-generation
console, Playstation
®
3. With unrivalled support
from movie studios as well as electronics
companies, Blu-ray is set to be the future in
High Definition media. The VAIO AR series
notebook, with an in-built Blu-ray burner not
only can record full High Definition, using
Sony’s affordable HD Handycams, but can also
store those memories for playing back, without
compromising quality.
HIGH DEFINITION
What is High Definition (HD)?
For many years, people have been watching
TV and DVD in Standard Definition (SD), This
means the video has a maximum resolution of
720 pixels across by 576 pixels high (PAL) i.e.
there are 576 horizontal lines in the image. High
Definition (HD) offers a much higher resolution
than SD, increasing the level of detail and size at
which the image can be displayed clearly.
Full HD 1080
There are two main types of HD resolution.
720 lines of resolution is generally referred to
as HD while 1080 lines of resolution is known
as Full HD and offers up to 5x the resolution of
standard definition or DVD resulting in amazing
picture quality.
High Definition Multimedia Interface
This connection allows users to connect a display
device directly to the VAIO, transferring Full HD
video as well as audio via the one cable.
