14. Larger networks
To ensure minimum latency the ipMIDI driver uses multicast UDP rather than TCP/IP. This means that:

The network connection should be as short as possible and should only use routers that can support high data
transfer rates. Problems have been experienced with some domestic routers, particularly when used with Pro
Tools.

Messages between the DAW computer and the will be received by all other devices on the network,
potentially causing problems in installations with more than one console or DAW computer. The UDP packets can
be blocked by using a network switch which allows static multicast groups to be specified. The Netgear GS108T
16 port switch is a cost effective solution which can easily be configured to allow ipMIDI traffic only to specified
ports.
