General information on commissioning
Introduction
Every positioner has to be adjusted individually to the pneumatic actuator in use. This
adjustment process is absolutely imperative and on digital positioners it is referred to as
initialization, calibration or autotune. Without initialization complete commissioning and
operation are not possible.
Before you initialize the positioner, you change just a few parameter settings yourself. The
quick start assistant helps you with initialization. This allows you to put the device into
operation easily and safely.
Initialization types
There are four different methods which you can use to initialize the positioner during
commissioning:
Initialization type
Description
Automatic initialization
Main initialization type
With automatic initialization the initialization process runs fully automatically. The
positioner works through the following steps one by one during initialization:
Determination of direction of action
Determination of the actuator travel or part-turn angle
Determination of the travel times for the actuator
Adjustment of the control parameters to the dynamic performance of the
actuator
Autom. initialization (Page 136)
Manual initialization
Use this initialization type to adjust the device to drives with soft end stops. To do
so, the actuator travel or part-turn angle can be set manually. The other
parameters are then set automatically by the positioner.
Manual initialization (Page 138)
Manual preset when replacing a device Use this initialization type to prepare for replacement of a faulty positioner. The
replacement can be performed on a running system without interrupting the
process. You only set the most important characteristic values for the actuator,
e.g. nominal stroke and actual position, and then activate the control function.
Subsequent initialization is necessary!
Device replacement (Page 140)
Copying initialization parameters when
replacing a device
Use this initialization type to copy device and initialization parameters and
transfer them to a new positioner. The positioner uses the integrated
communication interface to transfer the data. This makes it possible to fully
commission a new positioner without prior initialization. The process on a running
system does not have to be interrupted to do so. Subsequent initialization is
necessary!
