CAUTION
Optical radiation: Laser class 2
The human eye is not at risk when briefly exposed to the radiation for up to 0.25
seconds. Exposure to the laser beam for longer periods of time may cause damage to
the retina. The laser radiation is harmless to human skin.
■
Do not look into the laser beam intentionally.
■
Never point the laser beam at people's eyes.
■
If it is not possible to avoid looking directly into the laser beam, e.g., during
commissioning and maintenance work, suitable eye protection must be worn.
■
Avoid laser beam reflections caused by reflective surfaces. Be particularly careful
during mounting and alignment work.
■
Do not open the housing. Opening the housing may increase the level of risk.
■
Current national regulations regarding laser protection must be observed.
Caution – Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than
those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
10.3
Laser lifetime
Ruler3000 is equipped with an internal laser light source. As with any light source, the
laser of the Ruler3000 also has a limited lifetime. The lifetime can be prolonged by
considering and acting on the recommendations stated in this document.
10.3.1
About laser lifetime
The total lifetime of a laser module is dependent on the time the laser is lit. By
reducing the time the laser is lit, the total lifetime will increase proportionally. Further,
the ambient temperature also affects the laser lifetime. The lower the temperature,
the longer the lifetime. For more information, see
"Reducing the ambient temperature",
.
10.3.1.1
Reducing the time the laser is lit
There are two main ways to minimize the time the laser is lit in an application. These
are listed in the table below. Using the laser strobe function is the most efficient way to
increase the laser lifetime.
Method
Description
Laser strobe function
The laser is only lit during the exposure time of profile acquisition.
This is valid in both
Free-running
mode and
Encoder
triggered mode.
If
Encoder
triggered mode is used, the laser will not be lit when the
objects are not moving.
This method is the default behavior of the Ruler3000.
Frame trigger input signal
Profile acquisition is only activated when the frame trigger signal
is active. For instance, using a photoswitch as the frame trigger
signal source will only enable profile acquisition when an object is
in the field of view.
