Blooming Onion
Serves 4
Ingredients
• 1 large white onion
• 3/4 cup panko bread crumbs
• 1 Tbsp. olive oil
• 1/2 tsp. Cajun seasoning
• 1 tsp. sea salt
• ½ tsp. black pepper
• 1 1/2 tsp. paprika
• 1 tsp. garlic powder
• 3/4 cup fl our
• 1/4 cup nonfat milk
• 2 large eggs
• Ranch dressing
Directions
1. Peel the onion, then cut a small part off the top of the onion. Place the cut side down on a
cutting board.
2. Starting at one inch from the root, cut downward all the way to the cutting board. Repeat to
make four evenly spaced cuts around the onion.
3. Continue slicing between each section until you have made eight cuts total.
4. Place the sliced onion in ice water for at least two hours or overnight. Remove the onion
from the water, then pat dry.
5. Place onion on a tray or in a bowl cut side up, then open the onion so its petals are
exposed.
6. In a small bowl, mix the panko bread crumbs with the olive oil and Cajun seasoning. In a
separate bowl, mix the salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder into the fl our. In another
bowl, whisk the milk with the eggs.
7. Sprinkle the onion generously with the fl our mixture. Make sure to get the fl our mixture in-
between all the petals. Shake the onion to remove the excess fl our mixture.
8. Using a ladle, spoon the egg mixture over the onion into every crevice. Next, lift the onion
and turn it to make sure any excess egg mixture drips off.
9. Sprinkle the bread crumb mixture on the onion very generously.
10. Place the blooming onion in the fry basket (cut side up) and cover the top with aluminum
foil (like a tent).
11. Place the fry basket in the fry pan, then into the air fryer.
12. Set the temperature to 360°F.
13. Set the timer to 10 minutes.
14. When the timer elapses, check the crispness of the onion. Cook 5-10 more minutes to the
desired crispness if necessary.
15. When done, remove carefully and serve with ranch dressing.
