V5C Technical Manual
3-6
The keyboard/mouse interface consists of six electrical connections provided on a
6-pin circular mini-DIN connector (PS/2-style). Two terminal connections are for
communication between the keyboard and the keyboard interface port. Two
similar connections are for communication between the mouse and the mouse
interface port. All four of these signals are CMOS compatible. The two remaining
connections provide power for the mouse and keyboard’s operation. The key-
board/mouse connector with pin assignments as viewed from the front of the
V5C are shown in Figure 3-1. Signal definitions are given in Table 3-5.
A keyboard alone will work plugged into the keyboard/mouse connector, but a
mouse alone will not function. The mouse operation requires a mini-DIN “Y”
adapter, supplied with the V5C. The bottom part of the “Y” connects to the V5C
keyboard/mouse port with two sections splitting to form a separate keyboard
and mouse connecting point. This connector accepts any manufacturer’s key-
board that is designed with a standard PS/2 interface
When plugging a keyboard into the V5C’s keyboard connector, it is recommended
that the system power be switched OFF. Plugging a keyboard into a powered-up
system may cause improper initialization of the keyboard. If there is a static
charge on the keyboard, it may cause damage to the V5C’s keyboard controller
circuitry or to the keyboard circuitry itself.
The supplied Keyboard/Mouse “Y” cable is Belkin Prt# F3G117-01.
