Using the Network
When the network is configured and work-
ing correctly, it is possible to access other
computers and their resources, e.g. to read
or copy the contents of hard disks and
drives, share printers, etc.
Check the connection
To check whether a connection has been
established between the computers on the
network, there are some simple tests to
determine this.
UNC test
The UNC command enables you to check
whether there is a basic connection be-
tween the computers.
Select
”Start”
, then
”Run”
. Enter the
name of the computer you are testing the
connection to in the following format:
\\
followed by the name of the computer you
are testing the connection to, e.g. \\com-
puter1. Then press
”Enter”.
If the connec-
tion is available, a window appears showing
the shared folders and drives on the com-
puter you are testing the connection to.
Ping test
The ping command allows you to check
whether a connection exists to another
computer on the network, and whether the
TCP/IP protocol is correctly set up.
Open a command prompt window. Type
ping
followed by the IP address of the
computer you are testing the connection to,
e.g. C:\>
ping 10.0.0.2
.
