Introduction to networks
In a network, computers are connected to
each other to make it possible to transfer
files and share resources with other com-
puters on the network.
Internet connection
Using your network card together with an
ADSL/broadband internet connection nor-
mally causes the network card to be config-
ured automatically. If you still experience
problems, please refer to the user guide for
your internet connection or contact your
internet service provider for further infor-
mation.
Protocols
In order for computers to be able to com-
municate via a network, they all need to
use the same communication standards and
guidelines. This necessitates a common set
of rules to be used by all the computers.
These sets of rules are called ”Protocols”. It
is important that the same protocols are
installed on all computers on the network.
In order to facilitate smooth communica-
tion, each individual computer on the net-
work must also have a unique name.
The TCP/IP protocol employs a series of
numbers to differentiate the various com-
puters, while the NetBEUI protocol uses the
name of the computer.
