Possible symptoms of battery consumption
Unfortunately, it is not always obvious when a button or coin
battery is stuck in a child’s oesophagus. The child might:
•
cough, gag, or drool excessively;
•
appear to have an upset stomach or a virus;
•
be sick;
•
point to their throat or stomach;
•
have pain in their abdomen, chest, or throat;
•
be tired or lethargic;
•
be quieter or more clingy than usual or otherwise “not
themselves”;
•
lose their appetite or have a reduced appetite; and
•
not want / be unable to eat solid food.
These symptoms may vary or fluctuate, with pain increasing
and then subsiding.
A symptom of button and coin battery ingestion is vomiting
fresh (bright red) blood. If this occurs, seek immediate
medical help.
The lack of obvious symptoms is why it is important to be
vigilant about “flat” or spare button or coin batteries in the
home and the products that contain them.
Correct disposal
This marking on the product, accessories or
literature and without the bar on batteries
indicates that the product, battery and its
electronic accessories (such as charger,
headset, USB cable) should not be disposed
of with other household waste.
