Make sure the motorcycle is supported with a suitable stand or lift
so it will not tip over and injure you, or damage the vehicle, during
installation.
1. Open your saddlebags, leaving the doors down in the open
position.
2. Pull off the plastic side covers, one on each side ahead of the
saddlebags.
3. On each side of the bike, locate the single seat retention bolt
under and towards the front of the seat (A). Remove one seat bolt
from each side. As you remove each bolt, note that there is a loose
collar and a washer used in the seat pan, that could fall out. You
should not need these for the new Road Sofa.
4. If your stock GL1800 seat is equipped with a seat heater, you
will need to disconnect the electrical plug on the right side of the
bike, at the front of the saddlebag (B). Unplugging this will allow
you to remove the seat. Pull up at the front of the seat, and slide
the rear forward, unhooking it from the bike's frame.
5. If your Saddlemen Road Sofa is not equipped with a rider/pas-
senger seat heater, please skip ahead to #7.
6. The GL1800's heater electrical plug connector is not used with Saddlemen's seat heater system. Instead please refer to Saddlemen's Seat Heater
Instructions, included with every heated seat. Plug the included Seat Heat Dummy Load into the bike's heater plug, and turn the seat heater switch
to OFF. Your Road Sofa's seat heater switches are located on the side of the seat, for both rider and passenger.
WIRING FOR SEAT HEATER (OPTIONAL)
There should be two wires coming out from the bottom of your seat- one Ground (black) and one Positive (red). Connect the Positive wire to the
power source on your motorcycle. This can be directly to your battery's Positive (+) terminal, or spliced into a wire or connection that is powered only
when the motorcycle's ignition is turned on. Most motorcycles' owner's manuals have a wiring chart you can refer to. Connect the Ground wire to
your battery's Negative (-) terminal. Make sure that all connections are protected from shorting, and that any extra wire length is neatly wrapped and
does not interfere with the seat installation to the motorcycle. If you connect directly to the battery's two terminals, note that you must turn off the
Seat Heater switches whenever the motorcycle is parked.
7. To install your new Road Sofa, reverse the process of taking off the old seat. Slide the Road Sofa's rear bottom pan hooks into the bike's frame
under the trunk, and set the front of the seat down so the two mounting tabs line up with the seat mounting holes in the frame (A). Screw in each of
the two seat mounting bolts, with a torque setting of 7 lb-ft. Replace the plastic side covers and you're finished.
The new seat will be firmer than the original seat and will break-in over time to provide greater comfort (usually several hundred miles of riding is
required). During the break-in, the seat will also settle in, or lower, about ½ to one inch. Older seats may seem substantially lower because of the
worn-out, compressed foam that may have deteriorated with time.
It is your responsibility to make sure the seat installation does not create an unsafe or illegal situation. Remember that this seat is a custom acces-
sory. It is your responsibility to check the installation to determine if it will be safe for you to operate the motorcycle and to properly and safely carry
a passenger (this includes reinstalling the passenger grab strap or installing a suitable replacement). You must also ensure that the installation does
not damage your vehicle in any way.
Failure to install the accessory seat properly may allow portions of the seats or related materials to slip, or contact the vehicle’s moving parts or
exhaust system. It is vital that you verify that the seat and any related parts will not touch, or interfere with other components of your motorcycle
throughout the vehicle suspension's entire range of motion.
After 50 miles (80 kilometers) of riding, verify that the seat components and mounting are still tight and secure. It is your responsibility to make sure
that any accessory installation does not create an unsafe or illegal situation. An improperly mounted seat can interfere with the vehicle’s operation
and cause an unsafe riding condition.
