Surround Sound
If the prime purpose of the surround system is to watch TV and movies, the
surround speakers should be placed to produce a diffuse sound field. Wall
speakers should be placed to the sides or rear of the prime listening location,
located 24" (61 cm) or more above ear level when the listener is seated. If this
speaker location is closer than 24" (61 cm) from the ceiling, mount the speaker
upside down with the tweeter away from the ceiling.
For TV and movies, ceiling surround speakers should be placed directly to the
sides or rear of the prime listening position, with the tweeters aimed toward
the listener. This configuration is also suitable for a TV/movie and music mixed
use.
If the prime purpose of the surround system is to listen to music, the wall
speakers should be placed closer to ear level.

Good placement for serious listening:
•
Stereo pair in-wall. 6' to 8' (1.8m-2.4m)
apart, on the long wall of a rectangular room, centered on the listening
area. In-wall speakers should be at ear height when seated, if possible.
Best placement for serious listening:
•
Stereo pair in-wall. 6' to 8' (1.8m-2.4m)
apart, on the short wall of a rectangular room, centered on the listening
area. In-wall speakers should be at ear height when seated, if possible.
Good placement for background listening:
•
Stereo pair behind, above or to
the sides of the main listening area. 6' to 8' (1.8m-2.4m) apart, centered on
the listening area. If in-wall speakers are at ear height directly behind the
seated location they will be more distracting because the high frequency
response will be more prominent. Preferred placement is off to the side.
Surround sound:
•
The multiple surround locations can all be made to work
as long as the tweeters are properly directed toward the listener.
