Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-10

Im Frühsommer 1944 wurde vom Reichsluftfahrtministerium eine Zwischen -
lösung für eine leistungsgesteigerte Bf 109 mit dem neuen Daimler-Benz DB
605D gefordert, da die noch in der Entwicklung stehende Bf 109 K in abse-
hbarer Zeit nicht in Produktion gehen konnte. Bei Messerschmitt war man
jedoch vollständig mit der Entwicklung der neuen 109 und der Me 262 ausge-
lastet. Das neue Triebwerk entsprach in den Abmessungen weitgehend dem DB
605A und so wurde bei der Firma Erla in Leipzig im August 1944 die Zelle der
Bf 109 G-14 bis entsprechend modifiziert und als G-10 vorgestellt. Für den DB
605D waren größere Öl- und Wasserkühler erforderlich. Ab September 1944 bis
Mai 1945 produzierten Erla, das Flugzeugwerk in Wiener Neustadt und das
„Diana“-Werk Tisnov bei Brno noch rund 500 Bf 109 G-10. Die Flugzeuge wur-
den mit einem aus Holz gefertigten Seitenleitwerk und -ruder sowie größeren
Hauptfahrwerkrädern und dem kurzen oder langen Heckspornfederbein aus-
geliefert. Alle Flugzeuge waren mit einer MW-50-Anlage zur kurzzeitigen
Leistungssteigerung auf 1.800 PS und einer 20- oder 30-mm-Motorkanone (Bf
109 G-10/U4) ausgerüstet.
Heinz Ewald meldete sich im Dezember 1941 freiwillig zur Wehrmacht und
wurde zum Flugzeugführer ausgebildet. Im Herbst 1943 kam er als Nach

wuchspilot zum JG52 an die Ostfront. Bereits bei seiner ersten Feindbegegnung
erzielte er einen Abschuss. In der Folge waren seine Bf 109 überwiegend als
weisse 3 mit einem aufgemalten „Glücksschwein“ gekennzeichnet. Heinz „Esau“
Ewald wurden bis zum Kriegsende bei 395 Feindflügen 84 Luftsiege zuerkannt.

Because the Bf 109 K was still in the development stage and could not go into
production within the foreseeable future, the Imperial German Aviation
Ministry requested an interim solution in the form of a Bf-109 with increased
performance powered by the new Daimler-Benz 605D. This was in the early
Summer of 1944. Messerschmitt however were at this time working at full
capacity developing the new 109 and Me 262. In its dimensions the new power
unit corresponded broadly to those of the DB 605A and so in August 1944 the
Erla Company in Leipzig accordingly modified the airframe of a Bf 109 G-14 and
introduced it as the G-10. Larger oil and water radiators were also required for
the DB 605D. Between September 1944 and May 1945, the Aircraft Works in
Vienna Neustadt, the „Diana“ Works in Tisnov near Brno and Erla produced
around 500 Bf 109 G-10’s. The aircraft were manufactured with a tailplane and
rudder constructed of wood as well as with larger main undercarriage wheels
and either a long or short sprung tail skid. All aircraft were fitted with a MW-50
unit producing a short term performance increase of 1800 bhp and either a 20
or 30mm engine-mounted cannon (Bf 109 G-10/U4). In December 1941, Heinz
Ewald joined the Armed Forces as a volunteer and subsequently trained to be
a pilot. As a young pilot he was posted to JG52 on the Eastern Front in the
Autumn of 1943.
In his first action he already achieved an enemy kill. Thereafter, his Bf 109’s were
predominantly marked with a „Lucky Pig“ and a white „3“. Up to the end of
the war, Heinz „Esau“ Ewald was accredited with 84 victories during his 395
enemy missions.
