XH136 from No. 1 PRU was used for taking reference target photos
during the 1982 ‘Best Focus’ reconnaissance competition at Karup
Air Base in Denmark. When it arrived it belonged to No.39
Squadron, RAF but while it was deployed to Karup the unit was
disbanded and aircraft and personnel were handed over to No. 1
Photo Reconnaissance Unit, RAF. The ground crew of this
particular Canberra ’celebrated’ the event by painting over the Red
39 Squadron winged bomb on the tail and painted a ‘matchstick
man with an umbrella’ (as featured in a British TV commercial for
the Prudential Insurance Company at the time). It is not known
wether the starboard fin had the No.39 Squadron, RAF badge
painted over in this manner also so a pair of No.39 Squadron, RAF
badges (decals numbered 8) are supplied on this decal sheet as
well as a pair of ‘matchstick man with an umbrella’ decals (decals
numbered 7).
