911 Carrera (993) Model System
Climate Control Systems Diagnosis & Repair
Page 2.3
A/C System Description
Air conditioning was standard on M.Y. 1995-98 911
Carrera (993) models. The A/C system is electronically
controlled with automatic temperature regulation. The
passengers use manual controls to select air distribution
outlets and blower speed.
Refrigerant System Description
See the Refrigerant Cycle (In Section 1 – A/C Basics)
section for a complete description of each component in
this section.
Compressor
911 Carrera (993) models use fixed displacement 12-
cylinder swash plate A/C compressors. The total PAG oil
quantity in the system is approx. 140 cc (4.7 oz.).
Condenser
One A/C condenser is used on 911 Carrera (993) models.
The condenser is mounted in the front of the vehicle on
the left side and has an electric cooling fan to ensure suffi-
cient airflow and heat transfer under all driving conditions.
Receiver/Dryer
The receiver/dryer is located in the front of the vehicle,
behind the left front wheel housing.
Evaporator
The A/C evaporator is located in the air distribution
housing. Evaporator removal requires removal and disas-
sembly of the air distribution housing.
Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TEV)
The H-Type block Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TEV) is
located at the evaporator inlet in the center of the cowl.
Service Connections
911 Carrera (993) models have A/C high and low side
service connections located in the rear near the A/C
compressor.
Air Distribution System
The air distribution system controls air volume,
temperature and direction within the passenger compart-
ment. The system can add or remove heat from the cabin
air and provide ventilation, heating, cooling and defrost
functions.
911 Carrera (993) models have air-cooled engines, so
there is no liquid engine coolant and no heater core.
Interior temperature is controlled by mixing air cooled by
the evaporator with air heated by engine exhaust heat
exchangers.
These components make up the air distribution system:
• Air Distribution Housing
• Evaporator
• Left and Right Blowers
• Temperature Mixing Flaps
• Heater Flap Boxes
• Auxiliary Heater Blower
• Exhaust Heat Exchangers
• Hot Air Ducts
• Heating-A/C Control Unit
