(2) Install aft rubber control cables by the following procedure:
(a) Position the control cable in the fuselage.
(b) Connect the end of the cable (14 or 15) to the rudder horn (17) with bolt, washer, nut and
cotter pin (16). Allow the cable end to rotate freely.
(c) Connect the other cable end to forward control cable (10 or 11) at the turnbuckle (12 or
13) in the aft section of the fuselage.
(d) Set cable tension per specifications in Chart 2, 27-00-00. Check rigging and adjustment
per Rigging and Adjustment, below.
(e) Install tail cone fairing and secure with screws.
(3) Install the access panel to the aft section of the fuselage.
3. Rigging and Adjustment
CAUTION: VERIFY FREE AND CORRECT MOVEMENT OF RUDDER. WHILE IT WOULD SEEM
SELF-EVIDENT, FIELD EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT THIS CHECK IS
FREQUENTLY MISINTERPRETED OR NOT PERFORMED AT ALL. ACCORDINGLY,
UPON COMPLETION OF RUDDER RIGGING AND ADJUSTMENT, VERIFY THAT THE
RUDDER MOVES RIGHT WHEN THE RIGHT PEDAL IS DEPRESSED; AND, THAT THE
RUDDER MOVES LEFT WHEN THE LEFT PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
A. Use the following procedure to check and set the correct degree of rudder travel:
(1) If the rudder cables are connected, use the rudder pedals to swing the rudder until it contacts
its stops. If the cables are disconnected the rudder may be moved by hand. Refer to Chart 2,
27-00-00 for required rudder travel.
(2) A rigging tool may be fabricated from dimensions given in Figure 6 to aid in rudder rigging.
With the rudder against its stop, place the rigging tool against the side of the rudder and
vertical stabilizer as shown in Figure 2. Be sure the tool is not contacting any rivets. If no gaps
exist between the rigging tool and the surface’s of the rudder and stabilizer the stop for that
direction of travel is correct as required in Chart 2, 27-00-00.
(3) Swing the rudder in the other direction and check the travel as directed in step (2). Should the
rudder travel be incorrect, showing a gap between the tool and any part of the control surface,
the tail cone fairing should be removed and the stop reset to obtain the correct rudder travel.
(Refer to Figure 4.)
B. Use the following procedure to set rudder cable tension and alignment of the rudder and rudder
pedals:
(1) Remove the rear closeout panel to the allow access to the aft fuselage from the cabin.
NOTE: Place a suitable stand under the tail before entering the aft fuselage.
(2) Install a suitable tool which will streamline the rudder with the vertical stabilizer and lock it in
that position.
(3) Clamp the rudder pedals, so they align in a lateral position as shown in Figure 3 and are
locked in neutral per Figure 5, 32-20-00.
(4) Lock the nose wheel in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the airplane. Check that the nose
gear steering has been aligned in accordance with Alignment of Nose Landing Gear, Chapter
32.
(4) Adjust the turnbuckles in the aft section of the fuselage to obtain the required cable tension, as
given in Chart 2, 27-00-00 and to allow the rudder to align at its neutral position. Adjust cables
evenly to avoid uneven strain on aircraft components.
(5) Check the safety on the turnbuckles.
