Using the Radio Data
System (RDS)
An introduction to RDS
Radio Data System (RDS) is a system used by most FM r adio
stations to pr ovide listene r s with va r ious kinds of
info r mation—the name of the station and the kind of show
they’ r e b r oadcasting, fo r exam p le.
One featu r e of RDS is that you can sea r ch by ty p e of pr og r am.
Fo r exam p le, you can sea r ch fo r a station that’s b r oadcasting
a show with the pr og r am ty p e, JAZZ .
You can sea r ch the following pr og r am ty p es:

• In addition, the r e a r e th r ee othe r pr og r am ty p es, ALARM ,
ALARMTST , and NO TYPE . ALARM and ALARMTST a r e
used fo r eme r gency announcements.

Searching for RDS programs
You can sea r ch fo r a pr og r am ty p e listed above.
1 Press TUNER then press BAND to select the FM band.
• RDS is only p ossible in the FM band.
2 Press PTY.

4 Press ENTER to search for the program type.
The system sta r ts sea r ching th r ough the station pr esets fo r a
match, sto pp ing when it was found one. Re p eat to sea r ch fo r
othe r stations.
If NO PTY is dis p layed it means the tune r couldn’t find that
pr og r am ty p e at the time of the sea r ch.
• RDS sea r ches station pr esets only. If no stations have
been pr eset, o r if the pr og r am ty p e could not be found
among the station pr esets NO PTY is dis p layed. FINISH
means the sea r ch is com p lete.
Displaying RDS information
Use the DISPLAY button to dis p lay the diffe r ent ty p es of RDS
info r mation available.

Press DISPLAY for RDS information.
Each pr ess changes the dis p lay as follows:
• Radio Text ( RT ) – Messages sent by the r adio station. Fo r
exam p le, a talk r adio station may pr ovide a p hone numbe r
as RT.
• P r og r am Se r vice Name ( PS ) – The name of the r adio
station.
• P r og r am Ty p e ( PTY ) – This indicates the kind of pr og r am
cu rr ently being b r oadcast.
• Cu rr ent tune r f r equency ( FREQ )
Note
• If any noise is p icked u p while dis p laying the RT sc r oll,
some cha r acte r s may be dis p layed inco rr ectly.
• If you see
NO TEXT
in the RT dis p lay, it means no RT data
is sent f r om the b r oadcast station. The dis p lay will
automatically switch to the PS data dis p lay (if no PS data,
NO NAME is dis p layed).
• In the PTY dis p lay, NO PTY may be shown.
