Example Connection for a DVD/LD or LD Player
Since some LDs have soundtracks recorded on the special
2
RF format you need to make special hook ups to
ensure you can play all LDs on your system. If you don't have an LD (or an LD player with your DVD player) you
don't need to worry about this. For the VSX-859RDS hook up your DVD/LD or LD player directly and make sure
you make both a
2
RF output and
either
a coaxial or optical digital connection. To connect a DVD/LD player or
LD player with a
2
RF output to the VSX-839RDS, however, a commercially available RF demodulator (RFD-1)
is required. The RF demodulator changes the RF signal to a digital signal which is then processed by the receiver
through its digital input jacks. For more details, refer to the instruction manual supplied with the RFD-1. Of
course you must hook up your DVD/LD or LD player with standard (coaxial or optical) digital connections but if
you are able to hook up your player with
a
2
RF output (if your player has one) this will ensure you can use all
LDs available. We also recommend hooking up your digital components to analog audio jacks as well.
Before making or changing the connections, switch off the power and disconnect the power cord from the AC
wall outlet.

cord connection is
not possible for the
VSX-839RDS.
Be sure to make either a digital coaxial or digital optical connection as well, but you
don't
need to make
both. Make sure the RF demodulator digital in switch is set correctly (optical or coaxial depending on the
connection). Also, be sure to assign the jacks to the proper component(s) with the Digital-In Select
procedure (see p. 33 if necessary). See the component's instruction manual if you are unsure about its
input and output jacks.
