Installing Your Umbrellas
13. Smoothly and slowly open the umbrella as you would open any
umbrella until it clicks into the open position; as rapid opening could
compromise the life expectancy of the product.
Figures 16 and 17
14. Pass the umbrella shaft through the hole in the reflector and continue
passing the shaft through the umbrella hole in the swivel, loosening the
umbrella securing knob if necessary; then tighten at desired position.

Determining Your Umbrellas Distance from the Lamp Head
15. Plug your First Star lamp head into a standard home power outlet and
switch the lamp on using the switch on the power cord.
Figure 19
16. The fully illuminated umbrella becomes your light source, which is what
will illuminate your subject. The larger the light source in relation to your
subject, the softer the light. For best results, the lamp head should evenly
illuminate the entire umbrella, which will allow for some light spillage
around the edges of the umbrella. This is achieved when the umbrella
shaft has about 4 inches showing on the side of the swivel closest to the
subject you are photographing (
Figure 20)
. If you want a little harsher light
with a more defined shadow at your subject, move the lamp head closer
to the umbrella.
