4.3. Measuring Electrolytic Capacitor
Note:
The withstand voltage measurement function is the tester's additional
function, not primary function, so the tester can only measure electrolytic
capacitor whose withstand voltage is between 6.3V and 250V.
1.
Connect the black test probe to the negative lead of the electrolytic
capacitor to be tested, and the red test probe to the positive lead of this
electrolytic capacitor. Never reverse the connections; otherwise the
electrolytic capacitor may be damaged.
2.
The voltage reading ( in volt ) on the display increases quickly. But after
the reading reaches a value, the increase of reading will slow down.
When the reading is roughly stable, the reading on the display is the
approximate value of the actual withstand voltage of the electrolytic
capacitor under test.
Note:
The actual withstand voltage of an electrolytic capacitor does not equal the
rated withstand voltage marked on this electrolytic capacitor. Usually, the
actual withstand voltage of a qualified electrolytic capacitor is higher than
its rated withstand voltage by 20 percent.
To avoid overheating of electrolytic capacitor and damage, do not test
electrolytic capacitor for an over extended period.
Aftertest, the electrolytic capacitor is with charge ( or voltage ) and must
be discharged thoroughly to avoid electric shock. This is important,
especially for capacitors with high withstand voltage.
