5. Automatic transmissions
5.1 General information

There is a multitude of the most varied of automatic transmissions from vehicle manufacturers.
The designations of the individual driving gears vary in the same manner. The driving gears listed
in these operating instructions can therefore be only generally applicable and may not reflect the
designations used in your vehicle for this reason.
The designations used in the US are voluntarily adopted by most vehicle manufacturers.
These designations are specified and standardized legally in the US in
•
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 102.
The following sequence is maintained and used:
• P Park
-> Parking position with mechanical locking of the transmission to prevent rollaway.
• R Reverse
-> Reverse gear.
• N Neutral
-> Idle.
• D Drive
-> Forward driving with automatic gear selection.
