2 Warning
2.1.
Prevention of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) to Electrostatically Sensi
tive (ES) Devices
Som e sem iconductor (solid state) devices can be dam aged easily by static electricity. S uch com ponents com m only are called Elec
trostatically S ensitive (ES) Devices. Exam ples of typical ES devices are integrated circuits and som e field-effect transistors and
sem iconductor “chip” com ponents. The following techniques should be used to help reduce the incidence of com ponent damage
caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD).
1. Im m ediately before handling any sem iconductor com ponent or sem iconductor-equipped assembly, drain off any ESD on your
body by touching a known earth ground. Alternatively, obtain and w ear a com m ercially available discharging ESD w rist strap,
which should be rem oved fo r potential shock reasons prior to applying power to the unit under test.
2. After rem oving an electrical assem bly equipped with ES devices, place the assem bly on a conductive surface such as alum i
num foil, to prevent electrostatic charge buildup or exposure of the assembly.
3. Use only a grounded-tip soldering iron to solder or unsolder ES devices.
4. Use only an anti-static solder removal device. Some solder removal devices not classified as “anti-static (ESD protected)” can
generate electrical charge sufficient to dam age ES devices.
5. Do not use freon-propelled chem icals. These can generate electrical charges sufficient to dam age ES devices.
6. Do not rem ove a replacem ent ES device from its protective package until im m ediately before you are ready to install it. (M ost
replacem ent ES devices are packaged with leads electrically shorted together by conductive foam, alum inum foil or com para
ble conductive material).
7. Im m ediately before rem oving the protective material from the leads of a replacem ent ES device, touch the protective material
to the chassis or circuit assem bly into which the device will be installed.
Caution
Be sure no power is applied to the chassis or circuit, and observe all other safety precautions.
8. Minimize bodily m otions when handling unpackaged replacem ent ES devices. (O therwise ham less motion such as the brush
ing together of you r clothes fabric or the lifting of your foo t from a carpeted floor can generate static electricity (ESD) sufficient
to dam age an ES device).
