CONNECTIONS & SET-UP
The
PGA-05
is not only useful in the studio, but also for live performances--so here are a few common
set-ups. Please check the voltage requirement in your area and adjust the voltage switch accordingly.
The two position switch can be found on the base plate under the Palmer sign. If your local power
supply is 100 – 120 Volts, the switch should read 115. In Europe and many other countries, the power
supply is between 220 and 240 Volts, and should be set to 230.
All inputs and outputs are on the back panel. All adjustment controls for sound shaping are on the
front. Once the voltage switch is correctly set, use the supplied power cable to connect the mains
supply, but do not switch the unit on just yet.
Preamp/Multi-effect Units and PGA-05
Using a shielded instrument cable, connect the stereo output of your preamp or multi-effect unit to the
INPUT–CHANNEL 1 and INPUT–CHANNEL 2 sockets. The LINE/SPKS switch should be set to LINE. To
connect to the Microphone inputs of a PA or studio console, use balanced microphone cables (XLR)
from the XLR outputs BALANCED–CHANNEL 1 and BALANCED–CHANNEL 2. To avoid overdriving the
mixing desk inputs and reduce any signal noise, press the PAD 20dB switch. This cushions the input
signal by a factor of 10. If the mixing console already has a PAD-switch, use it instead of the switch on
the
PGA-05
.
Balanced microphone cables (XLR) should be used for all connections in order to cover long cable
distances without loss of signal quality. The BALANCED OUTPUT delivers a high enough line level signal
to directly drive a power amplifier. Connecting several pieces of equipment together with differing
chassis potentials can cause ground loops resulting in a disturbing humming noise. The galvanic
isolation between the inputs and outputs of the
PGA-05
’s transformer guard against ground loop hum.
The LIFT/GND switch provides further protection. The UNBALANCED OUTPUTS may be used as a line-out
to connect to a monitor amplifier, or to the sound card of a computer for HD recording.
Guitar Amplifier and PGA-05
Your guitar amplifier may have a line-out jack which you can connect like a preamp output (see
above).
Ordinarily the amplified sound is shaped not only using the tone controls but also by overdriving the
amplifier‘s power tubes. In this case the
PGA-05
should be hooked up between the amplifier and the
speaker. Connect a speaker cable (NOT an instrument cable) from the speaker output of the amplifier
to the INPUT of the
PGA-05
. The switch beside the input socket should now be set to SPKS. A tube
amplifier must only be operated with an output load resistance. This means a loudspeaker box must
be hooked up to the THRU jack. If you don’t want a loudspeaker then use a Loadbox (dummy load).
