IMPORTANT:  Overland Storage requires that all REO
parts be installed by an Overland Storage authorized

service provider. Improper installation may result in damage
which voids existing warranties.

This document describes how to upgrade a REO 9100 to a
REO 9100c by adding a hardware compression card and
additional memory, replacing the IDE Flash Driver, and
upgrading the firmware.

WARNING:  To reduce the risk of electric shock or
damage to equipment, always remove the power cord.

Unpacking

Carefully unpack the REO 9100 Compression Upgrade Kit
and verify that you have the following parts:

Electrostatic Discharge Information

A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry
or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent Electrostatic
Discharge (ESD), observe standard ESD precautions.

Upgrade Preparation File

1.

Download the REO 9100c

Protection OS™ upgrade

preparation file

from the Overland Storage FTP site:

ftp://ftp.overlandstorage.com/Outgoing/REO/50265.zip

2.

Unzip the upgrade preparation file

 to a working

directory on your host computer.

NOTE: The zip file is password protected. Contact an
Overland Technical Representative to retrieve the password.

There are two files in the zip archive:

• REO9100_serial.upgrade

—prepares the REO 9100

for conversion to a REO 9100c

o

verland_0-5.0.2.65_0-5.0.2.65.upgrade

—upgrades

the new IDE Flash Drive to the current version of the
REO Protection OS firmware.

Back Up Critical Data

CAUTION:

In the process of converting a REO 9100 to a

REO 9100c, you must perform a REO Volume Setup,
which will delete all existing data on the REO 9100.

Before beginning the upgrade preparation,

back up the

data

on your REO 9100 to a different storage medium (for

example, a tape drive or other backup device).

Record the REO 9100 Configuration

(If Desired)

The REO Protection OS has changed significantly between
version 3.1 (REO 9100) and 5.0.x (REO 9100c), and you
will not be able to use the Save/Restore feature to restore
your configuration when you upgrade.
Therefore, if you plan to create the same or a similar
configuration after the conversion,

make note of the

REO 9100 configuration

 information for the virtual tape

library, standalone device, and initiator, so you can
recreate it on the REO 9100c.
