C. Clear Space Near the Fireplace
Combustible materials must not be stored on the hearth ex-
tension. Outdoor room furnishings such as chairs or other
combustibles must be at least 4 ft (1.22 m) from the open
front of the fi replace.
D. Firescreen
A fi rescreen is always provided to control sparks. It must be
closed whenever the fi replace is in use. Glass doors or fi re-
screens must not be used to hold burning material inside the
fi replace. Only those glass doors specifi cally tested and list-
ed for use with the specifi c fi replace model should be used.
Screens should be closed when the glass doors are closed.

E. Glass Doors
Most effi cient fi replace operation using glass doors is with
the doors open. When the doors are open the screen must
be closed. Only Hearth & Home Technologies glass doors
may be used. See Figure 10.1 for proper glass door opera-
tion.
