Battery banks – Do they automatically recharge while cruising under engine
power?
Yes and no. The engine start and house batteries are recharged by the engine
alternator. All the other battery banks (bow and stern thruster and genset start)
are only recharged when AC power is available.
To ensure efficient recharging of
the house batteries while underway, leave the inverter to “charger only”, set to
30 amps.
So if you will be away from port with no shore power for a
number of days, it will be a necessary practice to run the
genset for a few hours every day as required to recharge
the other batteries.
Battery Status
A BlueSea battery state-of-charge monitor is located on
the panel above the pilot house windshields. The monitor
shows the level of charge and the rate of charge for:
1.
The house batteries – You should ideally not let the level
of charge fall below 60%
2.
The main engine start battery
3.
The generator start battery
If away from shore power and not underway, use the
genset regularly to recharge the house batteries when the
charge reduces to 60%.
