MOTOR MAINTENANCE
• CHECK MOTOR SCREWS
Check all motor screws for loosening at regular intervals, just
like other hardware on your vehicle.
Note: The 3 main 4-40
socket head screws on the shaft end of the motor may become
loose after a few runs of the motor and will need to be
tightened.
Also check the 3 flat head screws securing the end
cap on the back of the motor.
• CHECK MOTOR BEARING WEAR
After extensive use, the ball bearings in your motor may need
to be replaced. While the motor’s closed design will keep out
the majority of dirt & debris, some will eventually get in and
wear will occur. If the shaft will not spin freely, you may need
to replace the motor bearings
(replacement Velociti front end bell
with bearing factory-installed & rear bearing are available in Novak
accessory kit #5920--
If you do not feel comfortable changing the
bearing and end bell on your own, please contact our Customer Ser vice
Dept. for assistance
)
. A small drop of light oil on the bearings
periodically can help extend bearing life--however, too much
oil will attract dirt and will cause problems, so apply sparingly.
• CLEAN INSIDE MOTOR
Periodically remove the front end bell of your motor, remove
the rotor, and blow out the inside of the motor with
comressed air.
Be sure not to lose any small shim washers that may
be on the ends of the rotor shaft & keep them in the correct location.
SENSOR HARNESS WIRING
Should any of the 26G Teflon wires pull out of the motor’s
sensor harness connector, re-insert them in the appropriate
slot in the connector as shown below. There is a small plastic
tab that grabs a small raised barb on the back of the metal
socket crimped onto the Teflon wire’s end. The plastic tab
should be checked to make sure it has not deformed excessively
before inserting the socket into the plastic connector housing
with the barb toward the plastic tabs.

GEAR SELECTION
(Important)
As a general rule when using the
Velociti 5.5R
Brushless mo-
tor with 6 cells, start with a
3 tooth lower pinion gear
than
you would normally use with a low-turn brush-type motor.
As a general rule when using the
Velociti 6.5R
Brushless mo-
tor with 6 cells, start with a
2 tooth lower pinion gear
than
you would normally use with a low-turn brush-type motor.
Because of the broad power band of brushless, you can go 1 to 3 teeth
higher pinion than the above recommendations for more top speed, but
remember that going with 3 or more teeth higher will produce excessive
ESC heating. Be sure to check the operating temperature of the ESC
after making any gearing adjustments--the GTB ESC is designed to op-
erate comfortably from 160ºF-180ºF (warmer than typical brush-type ESC).
If you had a low turn modified brush-type motor in the
vehicle before switching to the Novak Racing Brushless
system, and you do not change gearing, you will be over-
geared and the vehicle will have slower acceleration!
Start within these final drive ratio ranges in the vehicle:
8.75-9.25 : 1

(rubber tire)
7.75-8.5 : 1

13.0 : 1

12.3 : 1

Higher final drive ratios will give longer run time at the expense of top speed. Lower ratios will
result in higher ESC temperatures--too low may result in overheating & thermal shut-down.
