System Alarms
In case of a system alarm, the originating device (SCU, BIU or NAVIPILOT CDU)
transmits the corresponding alarm message and code on the NAVINET 4000
Steering Control Network. The SAM and the NAVIPILOT CDU are capable of dis-
playing and acknowledging system alarms.
Below, the operation of the SAM to view and acknowledge system alarms is de-
scribed. For a description of the handling of system alarms with the NAVIPILOT
CDU, refer to the NAVIPILOT 4000 manual.
3.2.1
Handling System Alarms with the SAM
3.2.1.1
Continuous On-Off Beeping at the SAM: System Alarm
Continuous on-off beeping at the SAM indicates that a bus device has issued a
system alarm. As soon as the SAM recognizes a pending system alarm, it leaves
the idle mode and displays the corresponding error message on the screen.
3.2.1.2
Muting the Audible Alarm at the SAM
The audible alarm may be muted at the SAM to silence the alarm buzzer. The cor-
responding alarm state is not acknowledged when the alarm is muted.

Muting the alarm will also issue a mute command on the NAVINET 4000 Steering
Control Network to mute audible alarms at other bus devices and at external facili-
ties, e.g. a central alarm panel.
Note
In systems which include neither a SAM nor a NAVIPILOT CDU, the existence of a
system alarm state is observable only if either the external alarm relay or the serial
data central alarm interface is used, e.g. in conjunction with a central alarm moni-
toring facility.
To mute the audible alarm...
Press the DIM/MUTE key at the SAM.
