Helm
Function:
Configures the input for a handwheel connected directly to the
SCU(s) at the Main steering position.
Settings:
HELM ENABLED: NO
Disables the helm input. Choose this setting only if no hand-
wheel is connected directly to the SCU(s).
HELM ENABLED: YES
Enables the helm input and accesses the max. angle and cali-
bration settings to configure the input.
MAXIMUM ANGLE
Sets the maximum rudder order that may be commanded using
the handwheel. Generally, the max. angle should be set to the
order corresponding to hard-over as indicated on the hand-
wheel’s graduated scale (45 or 70 ° in most cases).
CALIBRATION
Accesses the calibration sub-menu, which allows to zero the
helm and to set the helm gradient.
ZERO HELM: Sets the helm’s zero point.
Put the rudder amidships. Press „OK“ to store the helm zero
point setting.
HELM GRADIENT: Sets the scale factor for the helm.
Put the handwheel to some order near the extreme of the
rudder travel (e.g. 45° Stb. or 70° Stb. for 45° or 70° steering
gears respectively).
Measure the DC voltage accross the handwheel potentiom-
eter’s center tap and wiper terminals (TB 1.72 and 1.70 at
the SCU).
Divide the measured voltage (in mV) by the order (in °).
Enter the resulting value (mV/°) as the helm gradient.
Caution
When the system contains more than one SCU, the electrical characteristics of the
helm signals provided to the individual SCUs must be as closely matched as pos-
sible.
Unmatched helm voltages in a multi SCU system may result in different rudder or-
ders obtained at a given helm deflection, depending on which SCU is in use.
