the ability to service multiple virtual
Local Area Networks (VLANs) or
subnets, enhancing security and perform-
ance. Implementing Layer 3 redundancy
features such as Virtual Routing
Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) and Equal
Cost Multi-Path Routing (ECMP) further
enhances redundancy in the closet.
As a core routing switch, the 8003 chassis
combined with the Nortel Networks
Passport 8632TXE module provides a
scalable solution with rich features for
enterprise environments (see Figure 1).
In addition, the 8003 chassis is a next-
generation solution for the Nortel
Networks Passport 1000 Routing Switch
series, providing enhancements for multi-
cast traffic, increased CPU performance
and increased Gigabit Ethernet connec-
tion capacity in a smaller form factor.
Whether in the wiring closet or in a
small-to-midsize core network, the 8003
combined with the Passport 8632TXE
module provides a high-performance,
scalable, compact solution.
As a key component of Nortel Networks
Intelligent Internet portfolio, the Passport
8600 routing switch delivers reliability,
future-proofing and reduced cost of
ownership to both enterprise and service
provider environments. The Passport
8600 provides a highly scalable,
customizable, modular platform for
intelligent service delivery.
Features
8000 Series 3 Slot Chassis
The 8003 is a three slot chassis with
one slot reserved for a CPU/SF module
(Passport 8690/1) and two slots dedicated
for I/O modules. The 8003 features two
hot swappable 500 watt power supplies
with one hot swappable cooling fan. A
fully loaded 8003 chassis can be powered
by one power supply. The second supply
Operational Simplicity
The Passport 8632TXE module and
the 8003 chassis leverage the existing
“world-class” configuration and
management tools available for the
Passport 8000 products. Nortel Networks
Optivity* Switch Manager, which includes
Nortel Networks Device Manager, and the
Optivity line of network management
products provide graphical configuration
and management tools for the entire
Passport 8000 product line as well as the
Passport 1000 Routing Switch series, the
Nortel Networks Business Policy Switch,
the Nortel Networks BayStack* 350,
the BayStack 410, the BayStack 420,
and the BayStack 450 switches.
Low Cost of Ownership
The Passport 8632TXE modules and the
8003 chassis increase the flexibility in
implementing a Passport 8000 solution.
The 8003 chassis can be installed and
redeployed throughout the network with
a variety of the existing Passport 8000
modules. As core or wiring closet needs
change, so too does the network. The
Passport 8000 product line includes
a full range of 10/100 copper and fiber as
well as Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, Packet
over SONET and Course Wave Division
Multiplexing (CWDM) interfaces.

Passport 8632TXE Module
The Passport 8632TXE module combines
thirty-two (32) auto-negotiating
10/100BASE-TX ports with two (2)
1000BASE-X Gigabit Interface
Connectors (GBICs). The Passport
8632TXE gives the customer the flexibility
of mixing 10/100BASE-TX for desktop
and server connectivity with 1000BASE-X
Gigabit risers on a single module. By
combining connectivity options on one
card, space and performance are optimized.
The Passport 8632TXE also benefits
small Layer 3 environments by utilizing
the 10/100BASE-TX ports for desktop
connectivity and the 1000BASE-X
Gigabit ports for server connectivity. The
use of GBICs gives maximum flexibility
by allowing a customer selection of
1000BASE-SX, -LX, -XD or -ZX to meet
varying Gigabit distance requirements.
By supporting all existing Passport 8600
cards, the 8003 chassis brings a Nortel
Networks consistent look and feel to
both the wiring closet and smaller data
network core.
Benefits
High Availability
The 8003 chassis delivers high availability
with superior redundancy. Two redundant
load sharing power supplies provide
physical redundancy. Distributed
Multi-Link Trunking, Split Multi-Link
Trunking (SMLT) and VRRP provide
logical redundancy for trunks and ports.
The Passport 8632TXE module combines
10/100 copper ports and Gigabit
Ethernet ports to provide optimum
performance in a small form factor.
By supporting all existing Passport 8000
modules, the 8003 chassis combines
proven performance with enhanced
flexibility.
