Engine does not turn over when
key start is operated.

Battery voltage low or discharged. Recharge and load test batteries to
12.5 volts min.
Wiring connections damaged or loose. Inspect and repair as required.
Engine or drivetrain mechanical problem. Inspect components for damage or
failure. Repair as required.
No power at ignition switch. Inspect connections and components
for damage or failure. Repair as
required.
No power at starter relay. Inspect and repair connections, fuses,
or wiring between starter relay and
ignition switch.
Solenoid moves pinion to engage
flywheel but starter fails to crank
engine. (Maximum acceptable
voltage drop between starter sole
-
noid and positive battery post or
between ground stud and engine
ground is 0.2 volts.)
Battery is discharged. Recharge and load test batteries to
12.5 volts min.
Poor terminal connections. Inspect, clean, and tighten as neces -
sary.
Solenoid does not move pinion
into engagement with flywheel. Open in starter activation circuit. Disconnect wire at starter solenoid.
Check wire terminal for 12 volts with
key in

Check neutral start relay. Replace as necessary.
Defective starter. Replace or repair starter.
Pinion engages flywheel and
starter turns but engine does not. Defective drive assembly. Replace drive assembly.
Engine is seized. Repair engine.
Electrical system is inoperative. Loose or corroded battery connections. Clean and tighten connections.
Sulfated batteries. Replace as necessary.
Master switch turned

Starter speed slow and engine
cranks slowly. Loose or corroded connections. Clean and tighten connections.
Low battery output. Charge and test. Replace as neces -
sary.
Incorrect viscosity engine oil. Use correct viscosity oil for tempera -
ture conditions.
Low voltage indicator light stays
on with engine running. Low engine idle speed. Correct engine idle speed.
Loose alternator belt. Check belt and belt tensioner.
Malfunctioning battery. Charge and test. Replace as neces -
sary.
Malfunctioning alternator. Repair or replace as necessary.
Batteries will not charge. Loose or corroded connections. Clean and tighten connections.
Sulphated batteries. Replace as necessary.
Loose or worn belt. Check belt condition and tension.
