3.4.1. Establishing a Serial Connection
You will need a terminal emulator program, such as
Tera Term
or
PuTTY
, on your computer to
communicate with your device using a serial connection. If you do not have such a program,

COM ports are assigned differently on each PC. To determine which COM port was assigned to
your device, you will need to open
Device Manager
, a built-in Windows application. Open the
Windows Start Menu
and type, “device manager”. Click on the
Device Manager
application that
comes up, as shown in the image on the left below. With
Device Manager
open, expand the
heading, “Ports (COM & LPT)”, and record the COM port that was assigned to your device. In
this tutorial, COM6 was assigned to the test device, as shown in the image on the right below.
