Status Power Requirements For Muting Volume Controls

Since the introduction of the Automatic Muting Volume Controls, there have been some
questions regarding the wiring and power requirements of these controls. All Automatic Muting
Volume Controls include a muting relay feature, which requires the presence o f 12VDC at the
volume control location. If this voltage is not supplied to the volume control, the relay cannot
be activated and the volume control will not allow the audio signal to be routed to the
loudspeakers.

In the case of the MVC series of controls , the most convenient method of providing the needed
voltage is by using the Niles MVC HUB4 Speaker Distribution Hub. In the case of the
MVC100IR Infrared Sensing Volume Control, the necessary voltage is provided via the status
conductor of the CAT5 wire connecting the MVC100IR to the IR Main System Unit. Both
scenarios require that a 12VDC power supply be plugged into a 120volt switched outlet on the
audio receiver and run into the 3-30 volt status input on the MVC HUB4 or IR Main System
Unit. A sample-wiring diagram has been provided to help illustrate this.
