Normal mode – secure mode
The Niko dimmer switch has three modes: the normal mode (default), the secure mode and the configuration mode.
In normal mode, all telegrams are secured with a unique transmitter ID.
In secure mode, all telegrams use advanced security protection with data encryption and message authentication through a unique incrementing rolling code counter (RLC). This entails that every message is encrypted differently
and an RLC value is never reused. These mechanisms protect against eavesdropping and replay attacks and can be used to control doors and gates. The receiver must support the secure EnOcean
®
encoding profile (EEP)
D2-03-00 to enable secure mode. Niko also recommends using EnOcean
®
receivers that support secure mode with explicit RLC.
Two secure modes can be configured:
1. secure mode with explicit RLC: Recommended by Niko since the RLC value is included in every telegram
2. secure mode with implicit RLC: This mode is only available with legacy receivers and is not recommended by Niko. In this case, the RLC value is only used with the teach-in telegram and not with subsequent telegrams.
In secure mode, a security teach-in sequence must always be completed with a receiver, so that the latter can decode the telegrams. Repeat the procedure if the teach-in process is not successful. A security teach-in telegram
can be initiated in two ways:
1. via a special button combination (SBC) on the Niko dimmer switch
2. via a near field communication (NFC) device with a software application (for example the EnOcean
®
Tool available in the iOS app store and Google Play store).
Special button combinations
Use special button combinations (SBC) to switch between modes, transmit a teach-in telegram or initiate a factory reset.
1. Remove the central plate from the EnOcean
®
dimmer switch
2. Perform the desired special button combination as outlined in the table below.
This combination is always an SBC + an energy bow sequence. The energy bow sequence determines the outcome.

Notes:
1. Before changing the operating mode, ensure to unpair the device from all receivers that were initially paired with this device.
2. Once the security mode has been changed from its default setting (normal mode) via the NFC interface, SBC mode changes are no longer possible.
However, 2 SBC and 3 SBC will still trigger a Security Teach-in telegram. Perform a factory reset to re-activate SBC changes.
Near field communication (NFC) device
1. Hold the NFC reader directly against the double key dimmer switch, EnOcean
®
.
When you use an NFC enabled smartphone, the NFC antenna is most likely located in the upper half of the phone
2. Configure the dimmer switch using the PC software tool or smartphone app that comes with the receiver (for example the EnOcean
®
Tool available in the iOS app store or Google Play store)
Notes:
1. PIN code: by default, the NFC configuration memory is locked with an NFC pin code. The default pin code is 0x000E215. We strongly recommend changing the default pin code. To do so:
a. Unlock the NFC device with the default PIN code
b. Enter a new NFC PIN code
c. Press and release the energy bow
The new NFC PIN will be applied to the double key dimmer switch, EnOcean
®
.
2. Custom NFC message: a custom message of 64 characters can be stored in the double key dimmer switch, EnOcean
®
. This message will remain active even after a factory reset. Use an NFC device such as the smartphone
app EnOcean
®
Tool read the current message, delete or edit it and upload it into the double key dimmer switch, EnOcean
®
. Press and release the energy bow to save the changes.
3. During the NFC communication, the double key dimmer switch, EnOcean
®
is not powered by the NFC interface. The energy bow has to be pushed and released to save settings in the NFC memory. The Niko dimmer
switch will update its internal settings during this push-release cycle and will therefore not execute any radio communication. Normal operation will resume during the following push-release cycles.
QR code scan
a. Open the QR reader software or app that comes with the Enocean
®
receiver
b. Scan the QR code on the label at the back of the double key dimmer switch, EnOcean
®
c. Follow the configuration steps in the software or app
