It is importat to avoid firing the stove so vigorously that the fuel glows white. This will cause
the ash to melt together to form larger pieces of slag which cannot pass through the shak-
ing grate, resulting in severe damage to the grates and fireproof stones. If the pieces of coke
are glowing cherry-red, there is a risk that the fire is about to go out. It takes a bit of practice
to burn coke; not too vigorously and not too weakly. The ash must be shaken down each
time fuel is added, or else insufficient air will pass through the grate to sustain combustion.
It is necessary to have a certain layer of coke present in order to keep the combustion pro-
cess going.
Storing coke
Coke should be stored under a cover, as it can easy become overly wet if it is open to rain or
snow. To prevent the coke from creating dust when it is handled indoors, it may be helpful
to spray the fuel with a water atomiser before use.
